Marsh McLennan names Moreland Murray chief inclusion and diversity officer

Professional services company Marsh McLennan has appointed Moreland Murray as chief inclusion and diversity officer (CIDO).

Murray, who has more than 30 years of experience in human resources leadership, will also continue to serve in his role of chief people officer for the company’s corporate functions, reporting to Carmen Fernandez, chief people officer of Marsh McLennan. He will also continue to serve as executive sponsor for Marsh McLennan’s race advisory council and Black leadership program.

As CIDO, Murray will lead the firm’s inclusion and diversity strategy and drive measurable and visible outcomes in the area.

“Moreland is a proven leader who has helped to shape our culture for a decade,” said Fernandez. “In this new role, he will accelerate our momentum on I&D and drive an expanded agenda for change.”

Murray joined Marsh McLennan in 2011 as director of HR, corporate, and was named chief people officer, corporate, in 2015.

Prior to joining the New York-headquartered firm, Murray spent 18 years at JPMorgan Chase, where he served as senior HR business partner for treasury and securities services and HR business partner for regional banking – overseeing the human resources function for 254 branches and 4200+ employees.

Before JPMorgan Chase, Murray was an employee relations advisor at USAA Property & Casualty Insurance and a compensation analyst at NationsBank (now Bank of America).

He has an MBA in labor relations from the University of Tampa and a bachelor’s degree in statistics and economics from SUNY Oneonta.

Marsh McLennan is the parent company of Marsh (insurance); Guy Carpenter (reinsurance); Mercer (HR and asset management); and Oliver Wyman (management consulting). The firm has more than 81,000 people advising clients in 130 countries.

“Marsh McLennan is a brains business, and our value is in how we think. If we all feel like we belong, we bring our best thinking to the table,” said Murray.  “Belonging is core to our I&D strategy.”

The firm’s I&D initiatives in recent months include: launching its Black leadership and diversity development programs – two new affinity programs aimed at developing new leaders and creating a more diverse talent pipeline; establishing RISE, a new fellowship program for Black MBA candidates in partnership with Fisk University and the National Black MBA Association; $5 million in funding for organizations advancing equity in the Black community in the US and UK; and expanding the reach of its LGBT+ employee resource groups in Latin America and Africa.
